Primary Knee Symposium: Biomechanical Considerations in the Knee

Uni vs. Total Knees

Uni Knees – Arthur Malkani, MD

Dr. Malkani discussed uni knees, their potential advantages PSlide A, potential disadvantages PSlide B, the ideal candidate PSlide C and contraindications. PSlide D

Total Knees – Kenneth Greene, MD

Dr. Greene argued that most patients are not candidates for uni knees. He reviewed a case study with a patient that had bilateral knees (1 uni; 1 total). At three years out, the uni knee had mild pain once in a while, but more ROM and natural feel. The total knee (Duracon) had slightly less ROM, and the patient didn't necessarily feel like it was his own knee, but he did not have one day of pain.
